A Passion for Goldington

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

We’ve been busy planning our next Social Action weekend, and we’re temporarily re-naming it! To fit in with the Bedford-wide ‘A Passion for Life‘ events, we’re calling it ‘A Passion for Goldington’. We’ll be doing lots of gardening, litter picking and possibly some football too, so do get signed up using the form below.

You’ll need to be aged 13 or over (with parent’s consent if you’re under 18) and be free between about 1pm and 5pm on Saturday 13th March 2010. We’re organising a residential for those who are upper school age too, but places are very limited, so get in quick! It’ll cost £7 including food and an overnight stay from the Friday to Saturday (venue to be confirmed shortly).

Toasties and Tea

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

Toastie-cut-and-sealLast night, a team of volunteer students from the Christian Union at the University of Bedfordshire in Bedford did something simple, and experienced something amazing. Between about 9pm and 4am, they handed out free toasties to freshers and other students outside the halls at the university’s Polhill Avenue campus.

The toasties came with no strings attached (they did include a free piece of foil), and were available to all, no matter whether they were on their way to town, to bed or even just coming back for seconds! That said, many people chose to stop and discuss their thoughts, fears and worries with them, with questions ranging from ‘Why aren’t dinosaurs mentioned in the Bible?’, to ‘What does God think about my homosexuality?’ Some of the team were able to pray with students who wanted prayer, and all the team agreed the evening had been a huge success, both for promoting the Christian Union, but also for the simple and amazing opportunity to meet, listen to and share in people’s stories.

During the course of the evening a total of 22 loaves of bread, 6 toastie makers, 3 blocks of cheese and 2 large tubs of margarine were used – meaning the team of around 10 created and distributed a total of more than 100 toasties.

Join Graham Kendrick’s Choir

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

For the upcoming concert of Graham Kendrick on 21st Dec, we need some volunteers to sing in a choir. If you’d feel privileged to play an important role in one of Graham’s concerts, we’d love to hear from you.

You’ll need to be available in the evenings for rehearsals at Ampthill Methodist Church on 24 Sep, 8 Oct, 22 Oct, 19 Nov, 3 Dec, 17 Dec and 21 Dec. Any under 18s must be accompanied by an adult on all of these dates.

For more information and to get involved, please get in touch with Carolyn Smith on (01234) 344544. If you’d like to display a poster or flyers advertising for choir members, a PDF version is available here.

On The Move Event Cancelled

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

The On The Move town centre free barbecue and worship event has had to be cancelled for this year. Difficulties suddenly arose with the Council at the end of last week, but the painful decision was made by the coordinating team on Monday. The co-ordinating team wrote:

“We know that 130+ volunteers will be disappointed, but by the crisis occurring at this stage, waste of further time and effort in preparation, and of money, has been avoided. The process has shown that volunteers from 14 participating churches were willing to respond positively to the challenge of again using their gifts and abilities for the Lord, to reach out to thousands of ‘not-yet-Christians’ in the local community – thank you!”

“Local churches have a good relationship with the local council, as shown by the Good Friday Witness, Café in the Park, the Hope Bedfordshire monthly market stall, free of charge, and the possibility of using the new permanent stalls on St. Paul’s Square, at the initiative of the Council.  We did not want to destroy any of the above by our lack of flexibility.”

Churches Offer Free Fun For All (Press Release)

Monday, July 21st, 2008

Adults and young people from churches across Bedford and the UK will be working together to provide a completely free family fun day on August 3rd 2-5pm at Longholme Way Circus Site, Bedford. The event, called ‘Re:Act’, has been organised in collaboration with Urban Saints, and will involve live entertainment, a bouncy castle, a barbecue, face painting and more. All are welcome to come along.

Most of those taking part in organising the day are volunteers, and many of the young people involved will be on a residential trip that includes running six of these days in different towns around the UK. Chris Johnson, one of the event organisers, said, “It looks like the day will be a fantastic opportunity for local people to come along and see the church working together and doing something positive for everyone in the community.”

None of the events on the day will be charged for, including the food and drink. After the fun day activities have finished at 5pm, an open air service will take place at 5:30pm, which people are welcome to stay for, if they like. For more information about the day, contact David Cavanagh on 01234 217519. For more information about Urban Saints, a Christian youth work agency, visit www.urbansaints.com.
